Black Blood Brothers episodes 1-5 my ramblings

I seem to have developed a pattern for watching anime where I watch the first episode and then don’t watch the rest for months. Usually it’s because something in them pisses me off or annoys me – most often it is a character. With Trinity Blood it was Abel. I took one look at him, heard him speak and said okay I’m done with this. I’m really not in the mood for annoyingly camp characters. I was a little relieved to see him be somewhat less camp later on in the episode but I still find him just plain ridiculous. Even now that I’ve seen the whole thing I just can’t take him seriously… but a Trinity Blood rant is for another post. The point is I always seem to forget that universal rule of anime – first episodes always suck (with the exception of Hellsing Ultimate XP).

This time the character that put me off was Kotaro. I took one look at that cute little curly blond kid and I just couldn’t watch anymore. I wanted to see him come to a tragic end as soon as possible. I couldn’t make it through the episode. I think it was about a month before I decided to give it another go and several more, after finishing the first episode, to watch the rest.

I was happy to see that Jiro is more the main character than Kotaro. However, this doesn’t change the fact that he looks like the love child of Alucard and The Dark Magician with a traffic cone on his head. I just cannot take him seriously with that hat on. Without it he’s fine and has J. Michael Tatum doing his voice which is pretty epic if I’m honest. I love his voice. He even did the voice of Dracula in the Castlevania Dracula x Chronicles and Luke Valentine in Hellsing… but I digress.

I have yet to form any strong opinions about Mimiko. Sometimes she fits all too well into the annoying and naive female lead. Other times she seems like she could be an actual heroine as she is able to defend herself and isn’t always a complete airhead.

Black Blood Brothers to me (at the moment anyway) feels like it’s stumbling it’s way into getting out a plot. Everything seems so thrown together and hap hazard. There are some elements of it that I like. The vampire mythology behind it is pretty cool with different types of vampires. I also like that having your blood drunk by a vampire is a very sexual thing (which is the fucking point of the euphemism you Twilight loving people), it explains why humans would let a vampire drink their blood. I do think they went a little over board with this though. I mean Mimiko pretty much has a huge scream-worthy orgasm when Jiro drinks her blood. But this isn’t really a problem for me as I’m all for the vampire lovin’ being precisely that – vampire lovin’.

I do like the way the plot is going. It seems interesting enough to keep me watching but yeah I wish it would be a bit more ordered and consistent. We shall have to see how things turn out :O

Was this post an excuse for me to post a stupid doodle? Perhaps.
